Alternative Valentine’s Day Activities

Developing an Alternative Mindset

It’s February! The month of love and romance. I believe this is a common misconception regarding this month or season.  If you are single this day of love makes you even more aware of the fact that you’re single which can be irritating and upsetting. If you are attached the pressure to be super romantic or to get treated like a princess can create stress and place unrealistic expectations onto your partner. How about approaching Valentine’s holiday with an alternative mindset? Instead of focusing on making it a big romantic production celebrate the people and friends that mean the most to you in your life. I am suggesting some non-traditional activities that you can try this Valentine’s Day. These activities work if you’re single, married or somewhere in between.

Spa Day

There is nothing like a nice relaxing day at the spa. The exquisite luxury of getting pampered from head to toe and having your every whim taken care of. This is the ultimate experience and one of the top ways of taking care of yourself. Scheduling a massage, facial, manicure or pedicure makes you feel good from the inside out. There are so many options for treating yourself to a spa day. You can actually visit a spa nearby or you can have the spa come to you. There are many mobile spas and pop up spa options for when you would rather avoid the traffic and get your pampering in the quiet of your home.

If going to the spa or having the spa come to you doesn’t fall into your budget or make the top of your list of interests you can still have a spa experience by creating it at home for yourself. Some easy ways you can bring the spa into the comfort of your own home include masque treatments, bubble baths, foot soaks, home manicures & pedicures.

How about scheduling a relaxing day at the spa with your significant other or your friends? If going out to the spa isn’t the best option hosting a spa party with your girlfriends or spending a quiet evening with your partner pampering each other works as well.

Abandon the Typical Valentine’s Activities

Order in from your favorite restaurant or cook your favorite meal together. Bake yummy sweet treats and spend some quality time together. If you are hungry for adventure plan a Valentine’s hiking expedition. Gather your friends and family and spend time on your favorite trail. Making It Meaningful

One can easily fall into the trap of approaching Valentine’s day with a shallow, half-hearted attempt at loving others. Clever marketing and advertising can trick you into believing it’s about teddy bears, candy, and expensive dinners. Valentines can sometimes feel like a holiday that should only be celebrated by couples. Those that are single can feel the increasing pressure to settle down and find someone.

I do not believe Valentine’s day is about any of those things. It is a day that is meant to celebrate your love for close friends, family, and significant others. The main idea behind this day is to truly take some time to let those people know that. Go beyond the holiday and make it a point to love and cherish people every day.  So, make this day meaningful and fun. Make sure your friends and/or significant other know how much your life is blessed to have them in it.
